Natural Gas Services for the Community
Our gas department owns, operates, and maintains a natural gas distribution system comprising 336 miles of steel, plastic, and cast iron main. SUB delivers 6,712 natural gas services in Sylacauga, AL, and throughout Talladega County. Our service area extends along Alabama State Highway 21 from Talladega south through Sylacauga along US Highway 280 and the surrounding areas. In Coosa County, we provide natural gas from US Highway 280 to outside the city limits of Alexander City.
Standards & Regulations
For the proper use of our services, we maintain a 200 lb. high-pressure system and an 18 lb. low-pressure system. We follow the regulations of the Alabama Public Service Commission (APSC), one of the strictest in the US, and the Department of Transportation (DOT). These organizations ensure our systems are up to date, ensuring public safety.
Our Gas Services Throughout the Years
SUB purchases natural gas from producers to transport up to 14,500,000 cubic feet of gas per day on the Southern Natural Gas Pipeline, while our Transco Gas Pipeline transports up to 10,000,000 cubic feet. To achieve this level of commitment to the community, we have gone through many changes and codes to enhance natural gas systems.
20th Century
In 1987, our spot market purchase and rate reduction resulted in reducing the gas price below the 1986 cost. By 1989, we began a marketing program that added 112 miles of the main system and 825 new services. This program aimed to provide gas services to areas that didn’t have electricity. To continue helping these areas, we offer special incentives for customers who replace their water heater with a natural gas system.
In 1997, we completed the construction of a 10-inch-high pressure main line connecting with the Transcontinental Pipeline near Alexander City. This project gave us a competitive advantage in purchasing and transporting our natural gas requirements. Since then, we have proudly utilized a Monthly Purchased Gas Adjustment to flow through changes related to our purchased gas cost.

21st Century
Since 2000, we have provided natural gas services to Teksid Aluminum Foundry. This company produces cylinder heads, blocks, and intake manifolds for automobile companies. Teksid is our third largest customer due to its 2,200 MMBtu peak daily usage. Our other customer includes Honda Manufacturing of Alabama, which we have served since 2001.
In May 2004, we began providing services to a new electric generating plant owned by AMEA. This 97 MW plant operates during the summer with a peak demand of 16,500 MMBtu. The plant aims to enhance our annual load factor with a historical winter peak.
Beginning in May 2004, SUB will provide interruptible natural gas service to a new electric generating plant owned by the Alabama Municipal Electric Authority (AMEA). This 97 MW plant will operate in the summer and have a peak day demand of 16,500 MMBtu.
