Water Utility Services

SUB provides water utility services in Sylacauga, AL. We maintain and operate various water systems, including the following:
  • Wells (2)
  • Water Supply Reservoirs (Lake Howard & Lake Virginia)
  • Conventional Surface Water Treatment Plant
  • Water Transmission & Distribution Mains
  • Water Booster Pumping Stations (6)
  • Water Storage Tanks (10)
With our utility lines, we can provide the highest standard of services for residents in the area. We supply 3.2 million gallons of potable water per day to 7,550 residential, commercial, and industrial customers in and contiguous to the City of Sylacauga. Our water systems may change over time, depending on the needs at the time. In fact, in 2009, the maximum peak demand for potable water was 4.4. million gallons per day.

The Sylacauga Water System

The Pine Grove Well is our primary source of potable water, which was constructed in 2009 and began service on January 12, 2010. This well has a capacity of 2.16 million gallons per day or 1,500 gallons per minute. Meanwhile, Park Well holds 0.5 million gallons per day or 300 gallons per minute.
The Lake Howard Treatment Plant operates as a peaking plant and is only used when the water demand exceeds the capacity of the wells. This plant has a water storage capacity of 1,075 million gallons, while Lake Virginia holds 552 million gallons. Both plants may store up to 9.944 million gallons per day during extreme drought conditions lasting 120 days.

Water Storage Tanks

Our storage tanks have a combined capacity of 7.68 million gallons. Its distribution system is 253 miles long, ranging from 2 to 24 inches in diameter, with 763 fire hydrants.
